On 14 November 2019, Vusal Alakbarli, Head of Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic met with Egidius Navikas, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

V.Alakbarli gave detailed information about the structure and activities of the Department, noting that 25 diplomats of the Department have been posted to the diplomatic missions of the Republic of Azerbaijan in different countries as foreign service officers, as well as ambassadors and consuls general. Highly appreciating the crucial role of Nakhchivan in terms of international relations of Azerbaijan, Head of Department noted that Consulates General of the Republic of Turkey and Islamic Republic of Iran are operating in the autonomous republic. Stating that Nakhchivan hosts international large-scale events, Head of Department made remarks on the visit of several European diplomats to the autonomous republic as part of "European Days" held here last year.

E.Navikas noted that developing relations with six countries of the EU Eastern Partnership Program is a priority in Lithuanian foreign policy. Ambassador noted that Vilnius is interested in the successful outcome of the new agreement between the European Union and Azerbaijan, as well as the negotiations on the aviation agreement. He also expressed confidence that the aviation agreement would also contribute to the opening of direct Baku-Vilnius flights. E.Navikas stated that he is interested in opening the Honorary Consulate of Lithuania in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and noted that he would increase his efforts to find a candidate for this position.
